Earn Ksh118,000 in 3 months from potatoes

Posted by

Potatoes are a staple food in Kenya, cherished not only for their versatility in cooking but also for their potential to provide significant income for farmers. Whether you are a smallholder or a commercial farmer, growing potatoes in Kenya can be a highly profitable venture. Potatoes are relatively easy to grow and can be harvested within a few months, making them an attractive option for many farmers seeking a steady source of income.

This article will guide you through the essential aspects of potato farming in Kenya, including costs, yields, seed varieties, cultivation practices, pest control, and profitability. By the end of this guide, you will be equipped with the knowledge to make informed decisions about growing potatoes and increasing your farming profitability.

The Cost of Growing Potatoes in Kenya

The cost of potato farming can vary based on the size of your farm, location, and the inputs you use. However, you can expect the following average costs:

  • Seed Potatoes: The cost of good-quality seed potatoes varies, but generally, you can expect to spend around Ksh 30,000 to Ksh 40,000 per acre for high-quality seed potatoes. The amount of seed required depends on the planting method, but on average, you will need approximately 100-120 kilograms of seed potatoes per acre.
  • Fertilizer: Potatoes are heavy feeders and require a substantial amount of nutrients, especially nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. The total fertilizer cost will typically be around Ksh 15,000 to Ksh 20,000 per acre. Fertilizer application is crucial for maximizing potato yields.
  • Labor: Labor costs will depend on the scale of your operation and whether you hire workers for planting, weeding, hilling, and harvesting. On average, you can expect to pay around Ksh 15,000 to Ksh 20,000 for labor costs on an acre of land.
  • Pest and Disease Control: Pest and disease control are vital to ensure the health of your crop. The cost of pesticides and fungicides can range from Ksh 5,000 to Ksh 10,000 per acre, depending on the pest pressure and the types of chemicals used.
  • Miscellaneous Costs: Other costs may include irrigation equipment, tools, transport, and land preparation, which can add up to approximately Ksh 10,000 to Ksh 15,000 per acre.

Thus, the total cost of growing potatoes on an acre of land can range from Ksh 62,000 to Ksh 85,000, depending on the factors mentioned above.

The Yield of Potatoes in Kenya

Potato yields can vary significantly depending on the seed variety, soil quality, management practices, and weather conditions. On average, one acre of land can yield about 90 to 100 bags of potatoes, each weighing 100 kilograms. With good management practices and proper care, yields can increase to up to 120 bags per acre.

Factors that influence potato yield include:

  • Soil Health: Healthy soil with good drainage and high fertility is essential for high yields. Regular soil tests and amendments can help optimize soil health.
  • Water Management: Potatoes require consistent moisture, especially during tuber development. Irrigation plays a significant role in maintaining yield potential, particularly in areas with unpredictable rainfall.
  • Crop Rotation: Practicing crop rotation helps prevent soil depletion, reduces pest buildup, and improves yields. Avoid planting potatoes in the same area year after year.
  • Planting Density: Proper spacing between potato plants allows for better root development and tuber growth. Planting too densely can result in smaller yields due to overcrowding.
  • Timely Harvesting: Harvesting at the right time is crucial for ensuring optimal tuber size and quality. Potatoes should be harvested once the leaves begin to yellow and die back, indicating that they have matured.

The Market Price of Potatoes in Kenya

The price of potatoes in Kenya fluctuates depending on the season, supply and demand, and the quality of the potatoes. Typically, the price can range from Ksh 1,800 to Ksh 2,500 per 100-kilogram bag during peak harvesting seasons. Prices may be higher in areas with limited supply or during off-peak seasons.

Factors influencing the market price of potatoes include:

  • Seasonality: Prices tend to be lower during peak harvest times when supply is abundant. Conversely, prices rise during off-season months when supply is limited.
  • Quality: Potatoes that are well-sized, uniform, and free from blemishes command higher prices in the market.
  • Location: The distance to market and transportation costs also influence potato prices. Farmers in remote areas may receive lower prices due to increased transportation costs, while farmers near major towns or markets can fetch higher prices.

Profitability of Growing Potatoes

The profitability of potato farming in Kenya can be very attractive if proper management practices are followed. Based on the following average costs and market prices:

  • Production Costs: Ksh 62,000 to Ksh 85,000 per acre (seed, labor, fertilizer, etc.)
  • Yield: 90 to 120 bags per acre (100 kg bags)
  • Market Price: Ksh 2,000 per bag (good quality potatoes)

Let’s calculate the potential net profit:

  • Low Yield Scenario (90 bags per acre): 90 bags x Ksh 2,000 = Ksh 180,000 in revenue.
    • Profit: Ksh 180,000 – Ksh 62,000 (low cost) = Ksh 118,000 net profit.
  • High Yield Scenario (120 bags per acre): 120 bags x Ksh 2,000 = Ksh 240,000 in revenue.
    • Profit: Ksh 240,000 – Ksh 62,000 (low cost) = Ksh 178,000 net profit.

Therefore, the net profit from growing potatoes can range from Ksh 118,000 to Ksh 178,000 per acre. With proper management, it’s possible to scale up the operation and significantly increase profits.

Potato Seed Varieties in Kenya

Selecting the right seed variety is one of the most important decisions you will make when planting potatoes. The variety you choose will affect both the yield and the marketability of your crop. Some of the best-performing potato varieties in Kenya include:

  1. Asante: Known for its high yield and resistance to pests and diseases, Asante is a popular choice for farmers seeking to maximize productivity. It is particularly well-suited to large-scale farming.
  2. Shangi: This variety is prized for its excellent taste and texture, making it ideal for the fresh market. It has a moderate yield but is often preferred by consumers for its cooking qualities.
  3. Kenya Mpya: A hybrid of Asante and Shangi, Kenya Mpya combines the high yield of Asante with the excellent cooking qualities of Shangi. This variety is resistant to pests and diseases, making it a robust option for farmers.
  4. Unica: Known for its good taste and texture, Unica is a suitable variety for the fresh market. It is a mid-season variety that performs well in most regions of Kenya.
  5. Manitou: This late-maturing variety is known for its large tubers, making it ideal for the processing market. It requires longer growing periods but produces high-quality potatoes.
  6. Destiny: A mid-season variety with high yield and great taste, Destiny is suitable for both fresh consumption and processing. It performs well in a wide range of soils and climates.
  7. Markies: Known for its high yield and versatility, Markies is another late-season variety that is ideal for both fresh market and processing purposes.
  8. Rudolph: This mid-season variety is known for its consistent yield and good taste. It is commonly grown for fresh consumption and processing.
  9. Arizona: A high-yielding early-season variety, Arizona is suitable for both fresh consumption and processing. It is often chosen for early market demand.

When selecting a variety, consider factors such as climate, soil type, and intended use (fresh market vs. processing). Consult with local agricultural experts or extension officers to determine the best variety for your specific area.

How to Grow Potatoes in Kenya: A Step-by-Step Guide

Growing potatoes requires careful planning and attention to detail. Below are the essential steps to grow potatoes successfully:

  1. Soil Preparation:
    • Tillage: Till the soil to a depth of 12 to 15 inches to allow the potatoes to develop properly.
    • Soil Fertility: Add compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil and ensure that it is fertile enough to support healthy growth.
  2. Planting Seed Potatoes:
    • Seed Selection: Choose certified seed potatoes that are free from diseases and pests.
    • Planting Depth: Plant seed potatoes about 3 inches deep and space them 12 inches apart in rows.
    • Planting Distance: Maintain 30 to 36 inches between rows to allow enough space for plant growth.
  3. Watering and Irrigation:
    • Watering: Potatoes need consistent moisture, especially during tuber development. If rainfall is insufficient, consider using irrigation.
    • Irrigation: Drip irrigation is highly recommended, as it helps provide water directly to the plant roots without wetting the foliage.
  4. Fertilization:
    • Fertilizer Application: Apply a balanced fertilizer that provides the necessary nutrients, particularly nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Follow recommended application rates for different stages of growth.
  5. Weed Control:
    • Mulching: Apply mulch around the plants to suppress weeds and retain moisture.
    • Manual Weeding: Regularly weed the fields to reduce competition for nutrients and water.
  6. Pest and Disease Control:
    • Use pesticides and fungicides as necessary, especially for pests like the Colorado potato beetle and diseases like late blight.
  7. Hilling:
    • As the plants grow, mound soil around the base of the plants (a process called “hilling”) to promote tuber development and protect the potatoes from sun exposure.
  8. Harvesting:
    • Harvest the potatoes once the foliage turns yellow and begins to die back. Handle the tubers carefully to avoid bruising.

Pest and Disease Management

Potatoes are prone to various pests and diseases that can significantly affect yield and quality. The most common pests include:

  • Colorado Potato Beetle: This pest feeds on potato leaves, reducing photosynthesis and weakening the plant.
  • Potato Tuber Moth: Larvae burrow into potato tubers, causing significant damage.
  • Late Blight: A fungal disease that causes dark spots on leaves and tubers, leading to crop loss.

To manage these threats, employ an integrated pest management (IPM) approach, which includes:

  • Crop Rotation: Avoid planting potatoes in the same location year after year to reduce pest buildup.
  • Resistant Varieties: Choose seed varieties with built-in resistance to common diseases and pests.
  • Chemical Control: Use appropriate pesticides and fungicides, but be mindful of environmental impacts and follow safety guidelines.

Conclusion

Potato farming can be a highly profitable endeavor if done correctly. By understanding the costs, selecting the right seed varieties, and following best practices for cultivation, you can maximize your yield and profitability. Whether you are farming for local markets or processing, potatoes offer a steady income for farmers in Kenya.

By applying the tips in this article, you can improve your chances of success in potato farming, achieve higher yields, and earn more from your crops.

I want to start potato farming on 1 acre in molo region but am already late in planting season. Should i go ahead and plant potatoes or i should try a new crop.

    • The Graduate Farmer 18 May 2015 Reply

Molo is a favourable region for planting potatoes because of its altitude. Its not too late to plant right now because they prefer cool weather and thats when you should try to get them into the ground.

Hi graduate Farmer. Thank you for the good work but the figures are quiet exaggerated. The average production in Kenya per acre is approximately 10 tonnes per ha though the “ideal” production is 20-25 tonnes . Kindly re do the Gross margins and take in to considerations the opportunity costs of capital, labor and fixed costs. Also use 18 tonnes per ha and not 22.5 tonnes.

Hallo graduate farmer, i am a potato farmer in south kinangop, based in Nairobi, i want to concur with you regarding the figures you have given here. The results though are dependent on the individual inputs from land preparation to potatoes growth. Potatoes farming is a lucrative business and it has low risks.
I have one request please, i want to expand my farming and am planning to go to Mau Narok, can you please direct me to the best area plus the lease cost per acre. I will sincerely appreciate
