We all have a connection to farming be it an uncle in ‘shagz’ who comes to visit us town folks once a year with a huge sack full of upcountry goodies, in it Potatoes, Matoke , Kuku Kienyeji, Managu fresh from the farm. That’s the closest most of us can have a taste of the country side. That place is too slow for a start; money takes forever to exchange hands unlike the urban lifestyle in Nairobi.

The Struggle of Job Hunting

So here I am burning calories along Moi Avenue just a few meters from Archives where my fellow comrades are taking a break from along and unfruitful day of job hunting, maybe this is a career? I job hunt every single day from 7am to 6pm. Most companies require 5 years job experience I might as well add job hunting to my CV.

Uncle Mutiso’s Success in Agribusiness

That evening I had a chat with my uncle Mutiso from up country. He is well known all over Kangundo as the go to guy in all things vegetable related. At his 5 acre shamba , he has embraced modern agriculture churning out, watermelon, mangoes, pineapples and an assortment of vegetables. He also rears 6000 Kienyeji chicken for meat which he supplies to Nairobi- a city with a population of 3 million plus+ who definitely don’t run on diesel but on vegetables, fruits, proteins and carbohydrates produced by guys such as Mutiso all over the country. In a month he earns upto Ksh 400,000 from his farming venture that’s more than most employed graduates in Kenya.

This was breaking news to me…Ksh 400,000 per month from farming?? I had long given up after one year of job hunting and I would settle for ksh20, 000 a month if that offer was on the table.

“How do you do this?” I asked. He looked right up at me and said,

The Importance of Access to Information

“Having the right information at my finger tips is the key to my success. I keep track of current market trends and the latest break-through technologies in Agribusiness by reading articles from Daily Nation Seeds of Gold. A good example is issue back in July 2015 about Immaculate Ochieng and her Green Farm. She set up poultry. Seeds of Gold explains how it made it possible for Immaculate to sell her eggs through its magazine and get good returns. It is such information that will help you as you begin your agribusiness venture and generate an income for yourself.

Farming as a Business: Changing Perceptions

At that very moment my perception on farming began to change, farming is actually a business. ‘Agribusiness’ that’s what they call it, a business where I can invest in and get good returns just like any other business.

The Need for Government Support

Society thus needs to view agriculture as a blessing and our government needs to prioritize it and provide funding for beginner farmers. So we can be a country that is not only known for its exports of tea and flowers but also for large amount of fruits, vegetables, and animal products.

Overcoming the Capital Barrier

Now one thing stands on my way; how to get capital to start my agribusiness venture. I guess that won’t be difficult to find out as I will always read it first on Daily Nation Seeds of Gold.
